Best Snorkeling Gear – How to Properly Fit Your Snorkel Mask When You Have a Mustache
Some of us divers have had a mustache for many years (and we are proud of it) and have gotten used to the idea that we have to work around that in order to properly fit our snorkel or diving mask properly so we get no leaks. For those gentlemen who are starting to snorkel or dive I have great news. You don’t have to shave it off if you really don’t want to. I have some recommendations for you.
The hair of the mustache normally interferes with the seal that the silicone skirt of the mask has to make with your face. If your mustache is not very thick (like mine); after putting it on, you can play with the skirt pushing it slightly up towards your nose. That has worked fine for me. If you still get a small leak in the mask you may consider getting a diving mask with a purge valve or getting a purge valve for your existing mask. Some masks allow this to be done after the mask is already made. This makes it easier to expel the water that may leak into the mask.
Now for both thin and thick mustaches, you may also want to consider the application of a commercial silicone grease (for that purpose), or applying a light coat of regular Vaseline to the mustache could do the trick.
But for you guys with thick mustaches you may also want to consider the idea of shaving your mustache just closely below the nose. That could expose enough skin for the mask to make a good seal and you can still keep your mustache.
These are recommendations of ideas and solutions I have learned and discovered during the years, there may be more out there it’s just a matter time and testing new ones.
